Hoax Bomb Threats Target Tamil Nadu Journalists and Media Houses, Raising Alarms on Press Safety

A wave of hoax bomb threats over the past week has targeted Tamil Nadu journalists, YouTubers, and media outlets, triggering widespread concern and police action. Journalists including Mani, Nakheeran Gopal, Savukku Shankar, Felix Gerald, Vishan, and Gabriel Devadoss, along with media organizations such as The Hindu, India Today, and Puthiya Thalaimurai, received bomb threats through emails and phone calls.

Following the alerts, Tamil Nadu Police and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) conducted extensive searches at several locations across Chennai and other parts of the state. All threats were later confirmed to be hoaxes.

Officials revealed that in the past eight months, over 600 such bomb threat emails have been sent in Tamil Nadu, with nearly 300 specific targets, often referencing current political events and public figures. The emails were reportedly sent using VPNs and foreign email servers, making it difficult to trace their origin.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing issue of digital intimidation and psychological harassment faced by journalists and media professionals in India.
Are these recurring hoax bomb threats a form of cyber intimidation aimed at silencing the media — or a failure of the system to protect journalists’ safety?
