Mumbai Press Club Responds to Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks

MEDIA REFLECTION | JOURNALISM & ACCOUNTABILITY

Throwback | November 18, 2024

The Mumbai Press Club had strongly responded to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks calling some journalists “slaves of their owners” during a Maharashtra rally — a comment that sparked debate across the media fraternity.

In its statement, the Press Club questioned the “high-handed attitude” and reminded all political leaders that journalists deserve dialogue, not derision.

📰 The statement also shed light on deeper issues — the contractualisation and job insecurity that continue to weaken journalism’s foundation, making reporters vulnerable to pressure and exploitation.

“If leaders truly wish to address the plight of journalists, they must confront the structural issues — not the individuals forced to work within them.”
Mumbai Press Club Statement, 2024

The real question today:
Are we, as a society, truly supporting journalists’ rights — or have we normalized attacks on the very people who question power?

Constructive dialogue, not dismissive remarks, is what the media — and democracy — deserve.
