The Press Club of India (PCI) has expressed deep concern over the alleged harassment of a senior journalist from Tripura following an FIR filed by an MLA in connection with a news report.
In a strong statement, the PCI said that such actions against journalists for performing their professional duties undermine the freedom of the press and the democratic principles of the nation.“The role of the media is to inform, question, and hold power accountable not to be punished for doing so,” the statement emphasized.
The PCI urged the authorities to ensure that no journalist faces intimidation or retaliation for carrying out their legitimate journalistic responsibilities. It reiterated that freedom of expression and the right to report are the cornerstones of a healthy democracy.
