UP JOURNALISTS BOOKED FOR REPORTING ON ALLEGED RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION IN JAUNPUR HOSPITAL

This incident involves a serious allegation of religious discrimination at the Jaunpur district women’s hospital in Uttar Pradesh, followed by legal action against the journalists who reported it.

The Allegation: A Muslim woman, Shama Parveen, who was in active labor, alleged that the on-duty doctor refused to treat her, explicitly saying she would “not treat a Muslim woman.” This statement was purportedly captured on a video that quickly went viral. Hospital authorities, including the Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS), have denied the doctor made any such remarks and initiated an internal inquiry.

The Legal Action: Police subsequently filed an FIR (First Information Report) against two local journalists, Mayank Srivastava and Mohammad Usman, who circulated the video. The complaint, filed by the CMS, charges the journalists with forcibly entering the labor room, filming, and damaging hospital property.

The Controversy: The core issue is the targeting of the journalists instead of an immediate, transparent investigation into the denial of emergency care based on religion. Opposition parties argue that booking the reporters is a deliberate attempt to suppress the truth and protect the hospital administration from accountability.

Why did authorities prioritize charging journalists for filming over investigating the serious religious discrimination allegations at the hospital?
